A few years back, my wife and I each were facing about $20,000 in credit card debts consisting of such things as a car purchase, living expenses from recuperation of a leg injury and so forth. We eliminated this debt in less than two years by playing a game!
It works like this:
My wife and I made charts on the wall - one with my total amount of debt and the other with my significant other’s total amount of debt (if you are single, just make a chart for yourself and reward yourself when you reach goals). Every time one of us reached a paydown goal of paying down $1000 of our total debt, the other would have to take them out to a sushi dinner. Every goal of $5000 paid down, the other would have to take them to sushi and a concert of their choosing. Once all the debt was eliminated, we would both get out of town and go spend a week vacationing in Vegas (which is actually a safe, entertaining and economical getaway for us because neither of us care for gambling.).
The results of this game were absolutely amazing! Believe it or not, we became debt free in a year and a half (we REALLY like sushi!) shuffling our debts in the aforementioned manner and paying down our highest balances each month and then continued the game in reverse once debt-free so that we could save for a downpayment on a home (each time the other saves $1000 they get sushi and then sushi and a concert at $5000 saved). Of course we were working like fiends, putting in overtime at our jobs every opportunity we got and doing every odd job we could find on the side staying completely tunnel-vision on reaching our goals, but the reward was definitely worth it!
We now own a townhome in Van Nuys, California (still can’t afford a real house, but we’re working on that with our realtor at this very moment), manage to pay down about an extra $2ooo on our mortgage each month and have a year’s mortgage’s set aside as a safety measure. My wife is making me take her to see Toby Keith, I am eyeing tickets to Stevie Wonder and we practically live at Tomo Sushi in Burbank. Go in and enjoy a great meal and tell Tom, the head sushi chef that I sent you! TWO SPICY TUNA HANDROLLS PLEASE! Sponsored by EnterTo.com the first REAL spam free email
